1220 (March) Squadron Air Cadets - Formal Dining With The Air Cadets From March

PDF | Print | E-mail

the formal Dining in Night pictureThe members of 1220 (March) Squadron Air Cadets recently held the annual Dining in Night.  This is a formal dinner during which new members of the unit are formally welcomed and good byes are said to those that left during the previous year.

Over 60 members of the Squadron met at the Conservative Club to enjoy a four course meal followed by after dinner speeches.  All uniformed members of the squadron attended in uniform of the day ‘mess dress’.  For the cadets this meant wearing a white shirt and a bow tie, with their uniform trousers or skirt.

During the after dinner speeches conducted by the Officer commanding, Flight Lieutenant Kirsty Burnham, the 20 new members of the unit were formally welcomed by asking the existing members to raise their glasses in a toast.  Cadets leaving the squadron during the year were welcomed back to be ‘dined out’. Flight Sergeants Toni Arnold and Daniel Woods enjoyed returning to join their many friends. Flt Lt Burnham congratulated them both on their successful cadet careers before they too were toasted.

A short review of the cadet’s personal achievements was made to inspire the newer members to aspire to also complete some of these.  Some of the personal achievements were Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s awards earned by seven cadets, completion of a Flying Scholarship for Flight Sergeant Alex Ogden and reaching the Corps Marksman standard for  five of the current cadets.  In what has been a successful year for the squadron some of the many achievements were reflected on, the hi-light of these was being awarded the Walker trophy as the best squadron in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing.

After the dinner the senior cadets hosted a paper plate award ceremony.  These awards have a fun element taking the opportunity to remember daft things that cadets have done during the year, but there are also some serious one for example the cadet’s cadet of the year.
