New Cadet Centre at RAF Cardington

PDF | Print | E-mail

The New Cadet CentreA new purpose built cadet centre is nearing completion at RAF Cardington.  The new complex will be home to Cardington Detachment Army Cadet Force and 134 (Bedford) Squadron Air Training Corps.

The previous building was a Thurston modular building nearing the end of its serviceable life.  As part of a unit development programme the building was bought by Bellways Homes with the condition that they would re-provide a joint cadet centre of the same specification located just 100 metres away from the original building.

The new purpose built centre is a traditional brick built structure with vast detailing to all aspects of the building.  The programme was carried out to allow an access road to be created for the new town.

The date of the grand opening of the centre will be Sunday 3rd October 2010 to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the R101 airship disaster.  The building will be opened by Air Commodore Barbara Cooper CBE, the Commandant of the Air Cadet Organisation.

The day will comprise of a fly past and a five minute Spitfire display.  There will be numerous activities for children, airship heritage talks and a tour of the historic Cardington hangers.

At last, a new home for Costessey

PDF | Print | E-mail

The new Sports and leisure centreAfter more years than anyone serving can reliably remember, Costessey Platoon has finally got out of the local wooden sports pavilion, where twenty on parade was a squeeze and lectures were given in the changing rooms and showers.
The fact that Costessey has been a consistently strong detachment for many years is testament to the leadership of the adult staff over the years.
The detachment now has use of several lecture areas, one equipped with a digital projector and it is negotiating for use of an office so that the stores and paperwork can come out of the boot of the Platoon Commanders car.
Capt. Roly Uppiah applying a fake woundThe new £1.5 million facility has been a long time coming but is now going to bring all the various groups in the village into one central location.
The new building was officially opened by Councillor Bill Dinneen, Chairman of the parish council and the event was turned into a grand Fete with stalls, fairground rides and many ‘have a go’ things to try.
Costessey Platoon took care of the car parking while Capt. Uppiah provided young and old alike with fake injuries. The whole event rounded off with a firework display after dark.
