The previous building was a Thurston modular building nearing the end of its serviceable life. As part of a unit development programme the building was bought by Bellways Homes with the condition that they would re-provide a joint cadet centre of the same specification located just 100 metres away from the original building.
The new purpose built centre is a traditional brick built structure with vast detailing to all aspects of the building. The programme was carried out to allow an access road to be created for the new town.
The date of the grand opening of the centre will be Sunday 3rd October 2010 to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the R101 airship disaster. The building will be opened by Air Commodore Barbara Cooper CBE, the Commandant of the Air Cadet Organisation. The day will comprise of a fly past and a five minute Spitfire display. There will be numerous activities for children, airship heritage talks and a tour of the historic Cardington hangers.
17 year old Ryan joined the cadets in June 2005 and has progressed steadily through the training syllabus, reaching Four Star in May 2009. To round off his post Four Star progression he attended the Master Cadet Course at the Cadet Training Centre, Frimley Park in April this year and received the required recommendation to SSgt Turton has also achieved his Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and has represented the county at Regional athletics. Over seventy cadets and instructors attended and the Company provided Collections were made around the site and people were charged a small sum for having their photo taken in Major Lincoln’s Second World War jeep. A new purpose built cadet centre is nearing completion at RAF Cardington.
Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet, Staff Sergeant Ryan Turton reached the pinnacle of his Army Cadet Force service on Thursday the 8th of July when he received his Master Cadet award from the Cadet Commandant, Colonel DB Hedges.
